Mounting to Wheel Base

The first step in setting up your GSI wheel is to mount it properly to your wheel base.

MOUNTING WARNINGS

GSI wheels are designed for broad compatibility with most hubs and quick releases on the market via the 70mm bolt pattern (PCD). For safe and proper installation, please follow these guidelines:

  • Prefer Using Non-Threaded Mounting Accessories
Attach hubs or quick releases using non-threaded holes to avoid potential damage.

  • Use Captive Screws for Threaded Mounting Accessories
If your hub or quick release requires mounting with its own threads, use Captive Screws to safely connect them. Never use regular screws for thread-to-thread connections, otherwise you will damage the mounting accessory and wheel.

  • Avoid Long Screws
Before connecting a hub or quick release, ensure the screws won't extend more than 4mm into the wheel body once attached, as this may damage internal electronics.

  • Provide USB Cable Clearance
Maintain at least 50mm of space between the wheel body and wheel base to prevent the coiled USB cable from making contact with the base.

Troubleshooting

For proper operation, you need to have a clean, reliable USB data throughput signal and the absence of EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) from other devices.

  • Connect wheel via a powered USB hub or directly to computer.
  • Avoid excessively long USB extension cables. Data degrades on longer USB extensions.
  • AMD systems with widely known poor USB performance update to AGESA bios 1.2.0.2 or higher. (check your motherboard manufacturer website)
  • Check for EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and ground rig if needed.
  • Try alternate USB ports if one port is not performing to spec.
  • Check coiled cable to make sure cable housing is screwed on tight.
  • USB shares data throughput with all devices on the system. Make sure you are not overloading the USB tree.
  • Use a dedicated PCIE USB card. (We recommend NEC chipset cards)

Clutch Modes

Select from 4 available modes that change the way the clutches function on the wheel.

Launch Control

Used to get the fastest launch off the line. Release either clutch to launch, while the remaining depressed clutch maintains the bite point.

How to Use:

  1. Ensure Launch Control is selected in the dropdown menu.
  2. Set a Bite Point that corresponds to your vehicle, then click Apply. You can find this by revving the engine in first gear, then slowly release the clutch until you find the most acceleration without wheel slip.
  3. Pull both clutches and rev the engine to the specific RPM that maximizes acceleration off the line, but minimizes wheel spin.
  4. Release either clutch and slowly release the remaining depressed clutch to maximize acceleration.
  5. There is no one size fits all for this procedure, since clutch bite points vary per vehicle and even per session. Be sure to experiment and practice for the best results.

Dual Clutch

Used to get the fastest launch off the line. Specifies a designated Master and Secondary clutch.

How to Use:

  1. Ensure Dual Clutch is selected in the dropdown menu.
  2. Select a Master Clutch (Left or Right). The Master Clutch setting determines which clutch outputs the full range from 0-100%.
  3. Set a Bite Point value that corresponds to your vehicle, and click Apply. You can find this by revving the engine in first gear, then slowly release the clutch until you find the most acceleration without wheel slip.
  4. Pull both clutches and rev the engine to the specific RPM that maximizes acceleration off the line, but minimizes wheel spin.
  5. Release the master clutch and slowly release the bite point clutch to maximize acceleration.
  6. There is no one size fits all for this procedure, since clutch bite points vary per vehicle and even per session. Be sure to experiment and practice for the best results.

Gas & Brake

Used to map two individual inputs that range from 0-100%.

Within your game, find the control you would like to map each clutch to.
Simply map each input within your game, no additional setup is required.

Use Examples:

  • Throttle & Brake
  • Secondary Throttle, Brake, or Clutch
  • Look Left and Right

Button Mode

Used to map two individual inputs with on/off behavior.

Within your game, find the control you would like to map each clutch to act as a button press.
Simply map each input within your game, no additional setup is required.

Use Examples:

  • Wiper Toggle
  • Turn Indicators
  • Look Left and Right

Push Button Activation Modes

The center rotary knobs on all GSI wheels support two modes, changing how they respond in-game.

On Push

When you Push+Hold the knob, the signal stays active until you let go. For example, you could map this to an engine starter which requires you to Push+Hold until the engine starts up - this isn't possible with the On Release mode.

Supported inputs:

  • Turn Left
  • Turn Right
  • Push+Hold

On Release

In this mode, Push+Hold does nothing until you let go - once released, a short pulse signal is sent. If you Push+Turn Left or Right, a separate input is sent, in addition to the regular turn inputs. This effectively makes it two rotaries in one.

Supported inputs:

  • Turn Left
  • Turn Right
  • Push+Release
  • Push+Turn Left
  • Push+Turn Right

On Push vs. On Release

Feature On Push On Release
When button push signal is sent While pushing and holding After releasing
Push+Turn ⚠️ May not work reliably in all games ✅ Consistently works
Total Inputs 3 Unique Inputs 5 Unique Inputs

Other Settings

Encoder Pulse Width

Controls how long the signal remains active once an encoder is rotated (5-Way Encoders, 7-Way Switches, Thumb Encoders).

By default, this is set to 30ms as it provides a good balance between responsiveness and accuracy for reach click in the rotation. Some titles may require this setting to be set higher in order to be detected reliably.

If you enconter this issue, increase the value by 10 and click Apply. Test within the title again and repeat until the issue is resolved.

LED Brightness

Controls overall LED brightness for RGB backlit elements.

GSI wheels are set to the lowest brightness setting by default to prevent power throughput issues. If you're using a capable USB powered hub, you can safely use higher brightness settings. If you experience disconnects, your wheel may not be receiving enough power.

Wheel Type

Changes the wheel input mapping and identifier for all GSI wheel models.

Do not change this setting unless instructed by a customer support specialist.

Cleaning Instructions

General Cleaning

  1. Before cleaning, unplug the coiled USB cable from the wheel.
  2. Use a soft microfiber towel lightly dampened with 99% isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the wheel.
  3. Use a soft detailing brush to remove debris from hard-to-reach areas.
  4. Be careful not to apply too much pressure on the labels as this may damage the matte finish.

Label Cleaning

  1. Use a cotton swab dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the labels.
  2. Gently brush the surface of the labels with the dampened cotton swab and use the dry side to absorb any excess alcohol.
  3. This helps to prevent drying spots from forming on the labels.

Label Maintenance

  1. To clean label surfaces, use a cotton swab or lint-free cloth lightly dampened in 99% isopropyl alcohol and apply very light pressure with small circular motions.
  2. To remove minor label surface blemishes, use a heat gun set to 38°C/~100°F from a distance of 3cm/~1in while evenly distributing heat to the affected area.
  3. Avoid applying too much heat to the wheel face, as this may damage the labels/buttons.

Label Replacement

  1. To replace the labels, remove all front knobs from the wheel. Loosen (but don't remove) the set screw until the knob can be lifted up from the wheel face.
  2. Carefully peel the labels with your fingernails or a soft plastic prying tool to avoid damaging the wheel faceplate.
  3. If any adhesive residue is left behind, use the adhesive side of the removed labels to repeatedly stick and unstick the surface to lift the leftover adhesive residue.
  4. If the adhesive is difficult to remove, we recommend dampening a cotton swab in either acetone or Goof-Off and using a circular motion to apply the chemical to the remaining adhesive. Always proceed with caution when handling volatile chemicals and follow their respective safety guidelines.

Shifter Maintenance

GSI Shifters come pre-lubricated from the factory. With extended use, you will need to re-apply a small amount of PTFE lubricant in the specified locations (see image) to keep them working at their best. DO NOT use spray lubricants, and DO NOT use excess lubricant. Be cautious during application and do not get it onto other parts of the wheel.

  1. 1Lubricant Area #1
  2. 2Lubricant Area #2

Clutch Maintenance & Adjustments

  1. 1 Maintenance
GSI Clutches may need to have PTFE lubricant applied to the spring resting points inside the clutch housing in order to keep the actuation smooth.
  2. 2Adjustments
Using a 2mm HEX Allen key with a stubby end, loosen (but do not remove) both screws on both ends of the clutch to until you can freely move the retention paddle. Set the retention paddle to a position that feels comfortable to you and then retighten both screws.
